The CDC estimates that there are up to 2,800 new cases of mesothelioma diagnosed each year, with approximately 2,500 more dying annually due to this often-fatal disease. Because the primary cause of mesothelioma is asbestos — which is still not completely banned in the United States — incidence rates for this form of cancer have remained steady, if slightly lower than previous decades.
However, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is committed to changing that grim reality, and providing patients with better access to the latest clinical trials. In April, NIOSH announced that it would be forming a new national mesothelioma registry, and seeking public input from doctors, patients, and advocates on how to execute this goal.
What Will the Mesothelioma Registry Accomplish?
Overseen by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), NIOSH already compiles data on mesothelioma cases through various state and local registries. These registries, however, do not have comprehensive or easily digestible information for policy makers and public health advocates: In fact, it can take up to 6 months for accurate statistics to reach NIOSH and other agencies.
By allowing multiple registries to be consolidated, NIOSH hopes that patients will be able to get greater access to clinical trial information. It’s also believed that a more complete data set will help policymakers and doctors freely share information about mesothelioma incidence rates, risks, demographics, and other factors.
NIOSH Now Accepting Public Input
Until July 8th, 2019, NIOSH will be accepting comments from the public, particularly on the feasibility of creating this kind of national registry. If you’re currently suffering from mesothelioma, it could be beneficial to contribute, as the agency will be asking about access to information, confidentiality issues, and other things that they may need to consider.
