If you are wondering how long you can be exposed to asbestos before suffering harmful effects, the fact is that there is no such thing as a “safe” level of asbestos.
The National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) states that “all levels of asbestos exposure to date have demonstrated asbestos-related disease.” Therefore, any level of asbestos exposure can result in an adverse impact on your health.
When it comes to asbestos exposure in all industries (e.g. construction, shipyards, and any asbestos abatement work), the Occupational Safety and Health Commission (OSHA) has established a permissible exposure limit (PEL) of 0.1 fiber per cubic centimeter (f/cc). However, the agency fails to establish any level of “safe” asbestos exposure.
Most people have been exposed to relatively lower levels of asbestos fibers at one point in their lives, often from asbestos contamination in the inside background air that or the outside ambient air we breathe. Furthermore, those who are exposed to higher amounts of asbestos fibers on the job or coming into contact with another person who has been occupationally exposed to asbestos have a more increased risk of developing an asbestos-related illness, such as mesothelioma and lung cancer.
Keep in mind, studies suggest that not all workers who are exposed to asbestos on the job are affected equally. A person’s vulnerability to developing an asbestos-related illness can be determined by several factors, such as the timing of initial exposures, genetics, and even smoking history.
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma or another asbestos-related disease, The Ferraro Law Firm is proud to serve clients throughout Florida and nationwide.
