Baby Powder Sales Discontinued in North America
On Tuesday, May 19th, personal care giant Johnson & Johnson announced that it would no longer sell its signature talc-based Baby Powder in the U.S. and Canada. According to the official press release, the company has decided to discontinue sales due to “changes in consumer habits” as well as “misinformation around the safety of the product and a constant barrage of litigation advertising.” Talc-based Baby Powder will continue to be sold in other countries, however, and the company’s cornstarch-based alternative will still be available in North America.
Although Johnson & Johnson insists that it will “vigorously defend the product, its safety, and the unfounded allegations against it,” the timing of this latest announcement seems telling. Only a month ago, U.S. District Judge Freda Wolfson ruled that the 16,000 lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson could proceed against the company’s protests – and draw from expert testimony linking its Baby Powder to ovarian cancer.
Many peer-reviewed studies support plaintiffs’ claims that Baby Powder contains traces of asbestos, a dangerous carcinogen that can cause ovarian cancer when applied near the genital region. Among public safety advocates, Judge Wolfson’s recent ruling was considered to be a win for the thousands of ovarian cancer victims who have filed suit against Johnson & Johnson after using its iconic product.
In recent years, evidence has also emerged that Johnson & Johnson executives knew about the asbestos contamination in Baby Powder for decades. During a trial in 2018, internal corporate documents showed that at least three different labs found asbestos in Johnson & Johnson’s talc between 1972 and 1975. These revelations prompted the St. Louis jury to award a record-breaking $4.69 billion verdict to the 22 plaintiffs.
